IGCSE Syllabus Changes May/June 2022-23

Major changes to the course of IGCSE Maths, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, and English have recently been made by Cambridge. These changes are only applicable from May/June 2023 and they will remain in effect until the year 2025.

Cambridge is known for updating its course syllabus occasionally, but over the past few years only minor changes have been seen, but recently Cambridge updated its entire course syllabus which had many significant changes made to it. For IGCSE Biology, it’s the largest change that occurred to the syllabus in ten years’ time, so it’s in the best interest of the students to acknowledge these syllabus changes so that they can prepare for the examinations accordingly.

The following are the new syllabus changes to the IGCSE chemistry course for the MAY/JUNE 2023 IGCSE examination.

Chapters that are removed from the IGCSE Chemistry syllabus;

– Metals :

Two large topics have been removed from this chapter, namely, thermal decomposition of zinc and extraction of zinc. Previously, these two topics were the main part of the paper 4 exams.

– Radio Activity:

The chapter on the uses of isotopes is removed from the syllabus. Previously, the syllabus had the use of uranium for making electricity.

– Solid, liquid and gas :

– Acidity:

Testing of soil acidity is removed from the syllabus. Later it was a part of paper 6.

– Carbon :

The topic of the carbon cycle is removed, but it is still advised to go through the topic because it will help you to build up your concept regarding global warming. Also, it is not advisable to study greenhouse effects without studying the carbon cycle.

NEW EDITION TO THE COURSE:

1. Chapter air quality and climate

2. Plastics: Learning about the harmful effects of plastics on the environment

3. Cooling curves

4. A new indicator is added which is called, Thymolphthalein. ( changes colour from clear in neutral or acidic conditions all the way to blue in alkaline conditions )

5. There is a slight addition to the flame test part of the identification of ions. The old syllabus had lithium, soddium, potassium and copper as the ions needed to be identified by their respective flames. But now they have added new ions, which are calcium and barium, as part of the new syllabus.

For many students, these major changes to the syllabus could be very upsetting, but there are many concessions for the students appearing in 2023. For instance, in the previous examinations, students were supposed to memorize a list known as the identification of ions and gases, but now this list will be provided to the students prior to the paper 6 exam, so students are no longer expected to memorize the entire list.
