IGCSE Syllabus Changes May/June 2022-23

Major changes to the course of IGCSE Maths, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, and English have recently been made by Cambridge. These changes are only applicable from May/June 2023 and they will remain in effect until the year 2025.

Cambridge is known for updating its course syllabus occasionally, but over the past few years only minor changes have been seen, but recently Cambridge updated its entire course syllabus which had many significant changes made to it. For IGCSE Biology, it’s the largest change that occurred to the syllabus in ten years’ time, so it’s in the best interest of the students to acknowledge these syllabus changes so that they can prepare for the examinations accordingly.

BIOLOGY IGCSE SYLLABUS CHANGES FOR MAY/JUNE 2023

Starting from IGCSE Biology, there were no changes in the exam structure, unlike for other subjects. Students will still have to give three papers for Biology, namely, Paper 2, paper 4, and paper 6. While the structure of the exam remains the same, the syllabus content for the course is significantly changed, but there is no need to panic because the following syllabus update has made the course even easier than before.

Chapters that are removed from the IGCSE Biology syllabus:

Excretion

From this topic, units of kidney dialysis and kidney transplant have been completely removed.

Drugs

From the chapter on drugs, topics related to nicotine, heroin, alcohol, smoking of cigarettes and diseases caused by smoking are removed from the syllabus and, instead of these topics, the entire chapter is now based on antibiotics and their uses.

Human reproduction

From this chapter, methods of birth control, steroids, development of fetus, process of birth, comparison of breast and bottled milk and relation of HIV with the immune system are completely removed with the exception of HIV virus details.

Lymphatic system

This chapter is entirely removed, including the formation of tissue fluid and lymph.

Malaria

It was one of the major topics of P4 but for the course of 2023, it is completely removed along with the topic of sickle cell anemia.

Human nutrition:

 

From this chapter, the units of dental care, tooth decay, and deficiency diseases are removed with the exception of the structure of the tooth.

–Plant nutrition:

 

From this chapter, greenhouse enrichment and the unit of fertilizers are removed.

-Ecology:

From this chapter, the acid rain part and the nuclear fallout part are removed.

-Conservation:

CHEMISTRY IGCSE SYLLABUS CHANGES MAY/JUNE 2023

The following are the new syllabus changes to the IGCSE chemistry course for the MAY/JUNE 2023 IGCSE examination.

Chapters that are removed from the IGCSE Chemistry syllabus

Two large topics have been removed from this chapter, namely, thermal decomposition of zinc and extraction of zinc. Previously, these two topics were the main part of the paper 4 exams.

–  Radio Activity:

The chapter on the uses of isotopes is removed from the syllabus. Previously, the syllabus had the use of uranium for making electricity.

–  Solid, liquid and gas :

The theory of Brownian motion is removed from the course.

-Hydrolysis :

Hydrolysis of protein is removed from the syllabus.

–  Carbohydrates :

Everything related to carbohydrates, either glucose or starch, is completely removed from the syllabus.

–  Photochemistry :

The components of photography and photochemical reactions are removed from photochemistry.

-Sulfur:

Sources of sulfur and uses of sulfur dioxide is removed from the syllabus.

–  Acidity:

Testing of soil acidity is removed from the syllabus. Later it was a part of paper 6.

–  Carbon :

The topic of the carbon cycle is removed, but it is still advised to go through the topic because it will help you to build up your concept regarding global warming. Also, it is not advisable to study greenhouse effects without studying the carbon cycle.

PHYSICS IGCSE SYLLABUS CHANGES MAY/JUNE 20

The most significant change made to the physics syllabus was the addition of a space physics chapter. Students will have a broader perspective on the solar system and planetary information, such as, orbital distances, durations, space density,etc.

Addition to the new syllabus includes the following:

  • Gravitational acceleration is expected to be taken as 9.8 instead of 10
  • Earth and the solar system
  • Calculations of resultant forces using two methods
  • Space physics
  • Learning about Sankey diagrams. The Sankey diagram is a very unique concept in the IGCSE It symbolizes the transfer of energy.
  • Unit Kelvin to be used instead of Celcous IGCSE Syllabus Changes May/June Topics that are removed:
  • Logic gates and control systems are removed
  • Thermometry
  • Thermal capacity

There are no significant changes made to the syllabus content of IGCSE Mathematics and Cambridge has clearly stated in their guidelines that any text book endorsed to support the syllabus for mathematics 2020 is still suitable for use with this syllabus.
